The Lambourn Almshouses’ ambitious chapel site development is now entering its final phase, with work progressing rapidly both inside and out. Landscaping has begun around the site, and inside the new homes the finishing touches are being added, including fitted kitchens, modern bathrooms, wooden floors and a beautiful oak staircase that forms the centrepiece of the restored chapel.

When complete, the project will provide nine new almshouses, welcoming residents in January 2026. The £2 million development has been a major undertaking for the charity, combining the careful restoration of the Grade II listed Methodist chapel with the construction of five new dwellings. The design has been guided by a determination to preserve the chapel’s architectural character while creating bright, comfortable homes for modern independent living.

The new-build element has been carried out in a style that is both sympathetic to the historic chapel and harmonious with its surroundings. Even at this stage, it looks as though it has always belonged to the site—an impression that will only deepen once the landscaping is complete.

Chair of Trustees Christian Noll said:

“We are delighted with the progress to date. It has been a complex and sometimes challenging journey, but seeing the project come together so beautifully is immensely rewarding. The new homes will provide comfort, community and dignity for our future residents, while preserving an important part of Lambourn’s heritage.”

The Lambourn Almshouses’ chapel development demonstrates how heritage and modern housing needs can be successfully balanced to create lasting social value for the local community.
