The Lambourn Almshouses Charity is delighted to report that significant progress continues to be made at the new Chapel Site development in Oxford Street, with the project now moving into its final stages ahead of occupation.
Landscaping works are progressing extremely well, with planting now underway under the guidance of local horticulturalist Charlie Watts. A wide variety of plants and shrubs are being carefully introduced to create a welcoming and attractive environment for future residents. Specialist grade topsoil supplied by Earthline through Noll Countryside Services has been used throughout the site. The material includes organic matter and has been sterilised to minimise the introduction of weeds and pests. Soil has been transported carefully around the site using a dumper truck to protect the newly laid tarmac surfaces.
Construction of the timber wheelie bin storage area is also nearing completion. The structure has been designed to blend sympathetically into the site and will eventually be softened further with climbing plants and additional landscaping.
At the historic Hardretts Almshouses, reroofing works are continuing successfully. During the project, substantial structural weaknesses caused by many years of rot were uncovered, demonstrating the importance of the restoration work now taking place. The trustees would like to extend their sincere thanks to Heritage Construction, who have approached the challenges with flexibility, professionalism and a positive can do attitude throughout.
Finally, after a lengthy and sometimes difficult process, the electricity connection for the new homes is expected to be completed shortly, allowing the solar photovoltaic system to begin generating electricity.

If all continues according to plan, the trustees are hopeful that residents will be able to begin moving into the nine new almshouse homes by the end of the month.
