There’s a definite air of excitement around the old Methodist chapel site in Lambourn, where construction work to deliver nine much-needed almshouses is coming along splendidly.

From a structural point of view, the chapel conversion is now very nearly complete. Within the next few days, the plumbers will be on site to begin installing the pipework, followed closely by the electricians, who’ll be getting busy with cables. After that, it’s time for the plasterboard, the final touch that will really begin to make the interiors feel like home.

Next door, the newly constructed homes, built in a style that closely matches the original almshouses, are also progressing extremely well. The brickwork is already up to first-floor level, and the timber and steel joists for the floors will be going in shortly. Not long after, the roof trusses will be lifted into place, giving everyone a clear sense of the finished buildings’ shape and scale.

The recent spell of bright, sunny weather has certainly helped, making conditions on site ideal and even, dare we say it, enjoyable. A huge thank you is owed to the brilliant team at Heritage Construction, who have worked tirelessly to keep everything moving while the good weather lasts.

Equally, an enormous thank you goes to the generous sponsors who have funded the work so far. Without your support, progress would have been considerably slower. Thanks to your contributions, we’re well on track.

The expectation is that the new almshouses will be ready for residents to move into during the first quarter of 2026 – a milestone that’s now very much in sight.
