When choosing materials for the new walls, we kept in mind the almshouses 500-year heritage and our goal of building something that will stand strong for the next 500 years. That’s why we opted for solid concrete blocks – they’re great for soundproofing and built to last. Inside the chapel, these walls have now been built up to the first floor, and you can really start to picture how the new flats will look.

Of course, there are always surprises when working with a listed building that’s over 150 years old. This time, we discovered that the lintels above the windows were completely rotten and need replacing. Interestingly, when the old lintels were removed, it became clear they’d already had a second life—they weren’t new when they were installed all those years ago. The cuts and holes in the wood show they’d been used in other buildings before being incorporated into the chapel.
